Middle East

Syria - Libanon - Jordan - Turkey

Middle East – it boils down to a two months long journey to Syria, Jordan and Lebanon in 2000.
However, due to more Middle Eastern than European climate, I’ve placed Turkey in this category.

Libanon 20-25.11.2000 2011-08-17 8:58
Beirut – you could still find many traces of the war.

The history of this city bares certain resemblance to the story of Sisyphus. Just when Beirut gets rebuilt another war hits.

Where is this world heading?

Pleasant country, but people were rather less friendly than in neighboring Syria.

You can see a strong division and the differences between the Muslim and Christian enclaves.

My stay was extremely short –it was expensive and as usual I had little time, nevertheless I saw everything that needs to be seen.

Jordan - 2.11-18.11.2000 2011-08-17 9:55
The famous and overrated Petra - Wadi Rum - recently recognized by UNESCO. But the best was definitely the Dead Sea.

Sightseeing can be quite tiring and being able to lie down on the water as if on a mattress is quite something.

Jordan didn’t win me over. People were less friendly than in the neighbouring Syria and it was generally a bit boring. Amman was dull, etc.

Syria - november 2000 2011-08-17 10:1
Friendly country. Nice people. Interesting places - what more could you want? Syria - definitely YES!

I was able to reach many interesting places thanks to the courtesy of two Polish doctors from the UN base in the Golan Heights.

Well ... a breakfast at sunrise at Tigris, or dinner at sunset at the Euphrates – priceless.

Turkey 2011-08-17 10:6
This is where it all started. My first longer, independent journey into the big world took place in 1995. The first camel ride. The first contact with ‘the exotic’.

I visited Turkey for the first time with my mother when I wasn’t exactly in this world yet...

It was shortly before my birth and this is why, according to my mother, I like Turkey and travelling so much.
It is a very interesting hypothesis, seeing that Turkey occupies a special place on the list of my destinations.

Although Turks are not generally liked in Europe, in fact, in their own country, they are very nice people.
So why do they annoy Europeans?
I have a theory on this one, but this is not the place to present it.

The country is also interesting because of it’s numerous historical remains, starting with the marvelous and wonderfully preserved Ephesus and finishing on the amazing Cappadocia.

Also Istanbul itself is a very atmospheric place.
