Asia 2009

Russia - Mongolia - China - Thailand - Malaysia - UK

Trans-Asia was a full three months of travelling.
Never again!
Such pace and distance does not suit me, and after getting back home I told myself - as above.

Of course, it was great to visit Moscow, be on board of a Trans-Siberian  train for 4 days and reach Lake Baikal, have a look at Mongolia and briefly visit China  to finally have a little bit of rest in Thailand.

However, spending even 3 months in each of these countries would still not be enough. : (

Below  Trans-Asia in a nutshell. In detail it has been described in polish language on

Russia and Trans-Siberian train 28.9-6.10.2009 2011-08-17 7:58
Communism collapsed, but this country is still associated with Lenin.

I arrived in Moscow in the morning. The weather looked promising, so after leaving my stuff in the hostel I went out to explore this magical city – and there is a lot to see!
Two days are definitely not enough.
The journey on board of the Trans-Siberian train to the Baikal Lakes is an unforgettable experience.
Exactly 96 hours on the train. It was very nice and cozy. Unfortunately, the landscape around Baikal turned out to be a little monotonous. I suspect that past Baikal it gets more interesting coz the train passes through the mountains. Well ... there was not enough time to travel to Vladivostok... shame.

Mongolia 7-10.10.2009 2011-08-17 7:53
Only a few days in this beautiful and utterly wild country.

The journey from Ulan Ude in Russia to the capital of Mongolia took almost all day, but outside the bus window landscapes were just lovely.

Ulan Bator - the capital city- blocks of flats, extremely interesting Parliament Building and next to it yurts.

Stayed for two days in the countryside and slept in a tent.

It would be nice to visit this amazing country once more, though surviving there as a vegetarian is really hard, but with a bit of good will ... anything can be done Leo…

China - 11.10-13.11.2009 2011-08-17 7:46
On the left u can see everything that is forbidden in the Tianamen Square!

China means modernity combined with incredible history.
Country so vast it’s difficult to comprehend in only one month.
People noisy and chasing after money.
China  tired me out!
So was it worth it?
Well ... to see the Great Wall of China at dawn entering the sea ... To stroll through the gardens of the imperial officials in Suzhou ...
To go up almost 500 meters in Shanghai...
To 'soak up'  The Yellow Mountains amongst a wild crowd of people... To swim across the Yangtze River and meet the Chengdu panda bears ‘face to muzzle’.
And above all, to enjoy the fabulous scenery of rice fields in Longsheng and the spectacular landscapes of Gulin - PRICELESS!

Thailand - 13.11-20.12.2009 2011-08-17 7:23
Some rest after the deadly chinese pace.

And again too short, though a friend of mine always says that having a little is always better than to overindulge
Traditionally it starts in Bangkok because that’s where the airplanes mainly land.
Then a few days rest on Ko Samui and a diving course on Phuket.
Kanchanaburi - Bridge on the River Kwai and further exploration by car of the eastern regions.

A short stay in the monastery at Ubon Ratchathani, followed by sightseeing of the east coast and the Ko Chang island.

For a dessert the famous Pattaya.

Malaysia - Kuala Lumpur 20-22.12.2009 2011-08-17 7:14
Transit through the capital.

Generally I'm not especially thrilled by Malaysia.

Yet, this time it was a perfect way to gradually leave Asia - departure from Bangkok would have been much more bitter.

With one more spare day, I decided to explore the administrative part of the capital – Putrajaya, which is some 30 km from KL towards the airport.

Putrajaya is advertising itself as a smart city.
I had some objections regarding this. See the photos.

London UK - 22.12.2009 2011-08-17 7:4
Getting back to Europe at this time of the year involved a thermal shock.

But still, we managed to land. The following day the airport was paralyzed because of a small amount of snow.
The shock was not only a thermal one!!
In Beijing, a modern subway fare is around 12 cents in London it cost me 5 euro to drive just a few stops in a metro that still remembers Queen Victoria.

Besides London isn’t so interesting. Buckingham Palace looks sad and gray, it’s hard to believe it’s the home to the monarchs that once ruled half of the world.
